Livingstonia Synod Includes Visible Covid-19 Component In PEATEMA

The Synod of Livingstonia in the Church of Central African Presbytery (CCAP) through its project, ‘Promoting Equal Access to Education in Malawi’ (PEATEMA) has incorporated the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in its quest for inclusive education.


The extension to include the fight against the global pandemic comes in the wake of some projects implemented by the Synod being derailed and affected in their implementation periods.


The leadership of the Synod led by its Moderator, Reverend Isaac Malongo presided over the handover ceremony of washing baskets to five schools in Ipyana education zone in Karonga District


Speaking during the function, Reverend Malongo said effects of the pandemic has forced the Synód and it’s project implementing partners to realign their efforts so that they should fight against Covid-19 which has hindered the service delivery of education not only in the country but globally.


“We have procured 410 handwashing basins to be distributed in 205 primary schools across three districts of Chitipa, Karonga and Nkhata-Bay, we must observe all preventive measures in our schools including wasshing of hands,” said Malongo.


The Synod’s Executive Director in the education department, Joseph Munyimbiri on his part said said there was a great need to revise and realign budgets with its partners in order to cushion some effects of the pandemic which almost disrupted teaching and learning.


“Promoting Equal Access to Education in Malawi Project needed to incorporate a visible project component hence the distribution of hand wash basins to reduce the spreading of the novel Covid-19 pandemic,” Munyimbiri highlighted.


Representing the Karonga District Education Director, Primary Education Advisor for Ipyana zone, Butamiwe Elias Mwalwanda hailed the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia for complementing government efforts in sensitizing the masses on the importance of inclusive education in the country.


“The Synod has demonstrated total commitment to assist government in the education sector, they have distributed washing basins and encouraged the wearing of face masks to ensure Covid-19 should no longer disrupt the teaching and learning in schools,” Mwalwanda said.


Also present at the function were the Synod General Secretary, Reverend William Tembo and his deputy Reverend Joseph Mwale.


The CCAP Synod of Livingstonia through its education department in partnership with partners: Sense Scotland and Scottish Government are implementing a K1.2 billion ‘Pomoting Equal Access to Education in Malawi project running from October 2018 to March 2023.
