The Network for Capacity Building in Education (NECE) has distanced itself from vigils being organised by some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) aimed at forcing the President to fire the Attorney General, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda.

NECE’s position comes in the wake of a 14 day ultimatum given to president Lazarus Chakwera to fire the Attorney General (AG) and the Directors of Public Prosecution (DPP) for government payment of K1.3 billion to corruption suspect, Zuneith Sattar whose contract is still under a restriction order by the Anti-Corruption Bureau for corruption.

NECE Executive Director, Mervin Nxumayo said Nyirenda is one of the public officers in the country who has engaged into a real fight against corruption hence forcing the president to fire him will be a setback in the fight against graft.

Addressing the media in Mzuzu on Friday morning Nxunayo advised the organizing the vigils on the matter to find logic behind dialogue while calling on all concerned parties to look at issues soberly.

“Lets not be political on issues that are aimed at fighting corruption in the country, it is not good to be used by some selfish political masters, to begin with the 14 day ultimatum given to the president to fire the Attorney General is immaterial,” Nxumayo said

The Attorney General came under fire since Monday after police arrested Platform for Investigative Journalism (PIJ), journalist Gregory Gondwe for publishing a story alleging that Zuneth Sattar was paid for his contracts despite AG’s order stopping the same.

Efforts to speak to the Attorney General, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda proved futile as his phones went unanswered several times he was called.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General has already apologized for the detention and confiscation of electronic gadgets for the PIJ Managing Director, Gregory Gondwe.

The AG’s apology was confirmed by the Media Institute of Soutern Africa (MISA) Malawi Chairperson Tereza Temweka Ndanga through also statement indicating that MISA held a meeting with Nyirenda at Capital Hill on Tuesday.
