As the population of older persons in the country continues to grow the Malawi Network of Older Persons (MANEPO) has described the just pàssed older persons protection Bill as a legislative milestone reflecting the country’s commitment to addressing the needs of its ageing population and ensuring their well-being and dignity.

In a press statement signed by MANEPO’s Executive Director, Andrew Kavala noted that the Older Persons’ Protection Bill, passed today by the National Assembly, represents a significant milestone for the country’s elderly population.

Kavala said Malawi’s older population still faces human rights violations, including discrimination, abuse, and violence emanating from traditional beliefs linking older individuals with witchcraft perpetuating violence against them.

“The Bill sets forth a framework for community-based and home-based care to guarantee professional assistance and secure living conditions for the elderly,” Kavala said.

The Manepo chief further stated that it has taken tireless stakeholder efforts to come up with the bill which includes provisions for monthly grants to older individuals across the country, enhancing their economic well-being and dignity.

“A committee will supervise the efficient implementation, enforcement, and oversight of the Bill’s provisions, reaffirming the intrinsic worth of older persons within Malawi’s society and sets a precedent for inclusive governance,” reads part of the press statement.

However, the press release highlighting that while celebrating this achievement, efforts to eradicate myths and stereotypes Malawi must continue to build a society that cherishes and protects its elderly with dignity and respect.
