After spending three days in custody, the Lilongwe Principal Resident Magistrate, Benjamin Chulu, has granted bail to popular social media influencer, Julius Mithi, following his arrest on Tuesday.

Mithi had spent three days in police custody after being apprehended in Mzuzu on allegations related to spreading false information. He is facing charges of fabricating false news with the intention to cause public alarm a serious offense under Malawian law.

During the bail hearing, Mithi pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court, after considering the circumstances, ruled in favor of granting bail, although the conditions of his release have not yet been disclosed.

The case has drawn significant public attention due to Mithi’s prominent online presence and the growing debate surrounding freedom of expression on digital platforms in Malawi.

Further court proceedings are expected as the prosecution prepares to present its evidence against Mithi.
