At least 100 households in Chibanja Township in Mzuzu have been affected by incessant rains  which have been falling for the past two days in some low lying areas within the City.

A visit by to some of the households affected by the disaster, has established that some houses have submerged in water.

Block leader for the John Mubena Moyo says the rains have destroyed food and other valuable properties.

“The situation is very dire and unbearable.  There are some households that have lost almost everything including  food and need urgent assistance,” he said.

In an interview, Charles Chakhaza, one of those affected by the flash floods, has appealed for urgent relief support such as food.

Ireen Biba whose house has submerged in water has blamed the Mzuzu City Council for allegedly not doing enough to improve the City’s drainage system.

Meanwhile, Independent Parliamentary Candidate  for Mzuzu South-East, William Chikweta Kaweche has visited the affected households giving them moral and material support.

“It’s shocking, people have no food now and I am hopeful that authorities will rapidly respond with relief assistance to support those affected households,” said Kaweche.

Most townships in the city of Mzuzu are receiving heavy rainfall affecting some households in the process and destroying feeder roads rendering many prone to waterborne diseases.

Mzuzu City Council did not provide a drainage system that could alleviate challenges emanating from flash floods.
