A newly constructed bridge in Nkhatabay South East constituency, represented by Deputy Minister of Health Noah Chimpeni, has been swept away by heavy rains.

The Lingwinya bridge, built using over K30 million in Constituency Development Fund (CDF) resources, collapsed despite being recently completed.

Sources within the Area Development Committee (ADC) who spoke on condition of anonymity suggest that the bridge’s construction was rushed to meet a tight deadline, potentially for use during the campaign period, which may have compromised its quality and led to its demise.

“The hasty construction has raised concerns about the use of CDF funds and the prioritization of projects,” said the ADC member.

Attempts to reach Honourable Chimpeni for clarification were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone lines went unanswered.


The incident has sparked questions about the accountability and transparency in the use of public resources for development projects with residents calling for investigations into the matter to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

The destruction of the bridge has also highlighted concerns about the impact of such failures on local communities, including disruptions to transportation and access to essential services.
