Member of Parliament for Mzuzu City South-East Constituency, Honourable William Chikweta Kaweche, has reaffirmed his commitment to improving the wellbeing of the elderly, particularly through literacy initiatives.

Speaking on Friday during the closing ceremony of this year’s elderly literacy classes at St. John of Cod’s Tovwirane Elderly Centre in Masasa Township, Kaweche applauded the visible improvements in the lives of elderly participants.

“I commend St. John of Cod for prioritizing elderly literacy, which is the foundation for meaningful socioeconomic development,” said Kaweche. “Adult literacy is the basis for meaningful socioeconomic development, which St. John of Cod is championing.”

One of the beneficiaries, Gogo Beza, expressed heartfelt gratitude for an early Christmas gift presented by the Parliamentarian, describing it as a true gesture of care and compassion for the elderly.

Traditional leaders, including Group Village Headmen Gowamu, Kamchibazi, and Chikundula, also praised Kaweche for his unwavering support in promoting literacy among the elderly.

“It is encouraging to see the elderly enrolled here at Tovwirane Elderly Centre reading and writing,” said one of the village heads, Gowamo.

The closing ceremony highlights the transformative impact of adult education on the elderly and underscores the importance of inclusive development initiatives in local communities.
