The former ruling, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been advised to settle the current leadership wrangles if ambitions to form government in 2025 are genuine.

The calls come in the wake of a successful mega rally held in Mzuzu on Sunday which many observers have described as a mother of all rallies after the 2020 presidential election.

One of the socio-political commentators, Tiyane Nyirenda said a huge turn out of people to the Sunday’s political rally is a clear sign of frustration with the Tonse government among many peoplee who are complaining with escalating prices of goods and services in the country.

Nyirenda said it is a good bid towards making DPP as a responsive party Towards the new demand in Malawi for clean politics (as demonstrated over the last 2 years) and to prove Malawians that DPP is a reliable party, for the people of Malawi.

“They should just make sure all channels of intraparty democracy are put to good use to avoid dividing the party, the one elected to lead the party should consider his appeal nation wide, and his ability to work with other partners,” Nyirenda said.

He further stated that a convention is one of the tests for the one elected to showcase leadership and political skills to steer the party at the grassroots as he or she assumes the high office.

During the Sunday mega rally the embattled DPP Regional Governor for the north, Christopher Mzomera Ngwira stole the show.

Ngwira who has been missing from public domain since his release from prison last month by the Mzuzu High Court was given control of the podium by the acting regional governor, Akim Mwanza to greet people who thronged Katoto secondary school ground but only for the charismatic speaking Ngwira to become toast of the day.

Combining three proverbs with a spiritual chorus from the CCAP Hyme book, Ngwira showed the gathered DPP leaders who graced the occasion on the day what he is capable of politically while mesmerising the many DPP followers who thought he was down and out.

“Even those who did not vote for the Democratic Progressive Party are also complaining with the rising cost of living, let’s join our hands together and form a caring government in 2025,” apealed Ngwira.

However, despite Ngwira raising the temperature of the meeting to become more lively in an interview, Mzomera said he is still waiting for the party’s National Governing Council to determine his new role in the party.

Addressing the gathering, former Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor, Dalitso Kabambe said through prudent economic principles the DPP government maintained the inflation to a single digit and Agriculture Input Subsidy materials were affordable to all Malawians.

“We managed the economy very well until 2020 when Tonse Alliance took over the reign of government and pundered the economic resources and stability that have enabled us to afford managing the cost fertilizers and other essential goods and services,” Kabambe said.

Other notable speakers who spoke include; former Agriculture minister, George Chaponda, parliamentarian for Chikwawa north, Owen Chomanika, Paul Gadama, Chimwemwe Chipungu and Director of women for the north, Joyce Chikukula.

However, on many occasions Political commentators have said the DPP is failing to serve Malawians better in holding government accountable as the main opposition party.
