Lilongwe, 1st April 2026; Following the Malawi National Football Team’s disappointing performance at the just-ended Mukuru Four Nations Tournament in Francistown, Botswana, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Fleetwood Haiya has acknowledged the frustration felt by soccer supporters across the country.

The FAM president appealed for continued unity and unwavering support as the team works toward achieving success in continental and global football qualifications.

Writing on his official Facebook page, Haiya expressed hope that the Flames can emulate the example set by the Scorchers, who overcame early setbacks in friendlies, improved steadily, and ultimately secured qualification.

“We believe the same path is possible for the Flames. The preparations have been provided, and these experiences must now translate into growth and results. The expectation and target remains clear—QUALIFICATION FOR THE 2027 AFCON  a MUST,” Haiya stated.

Malawi opened their campaign with a goalless draw against Zambia, eventually losing 9–8 on penalties, which denied them a place in the final.

Despite failing to score in both matches, Flames coach Callisto Pasuwa remained optimistic, stressing that “the tournament provided valuable regional competition and an opportunity to sharpen preparations for continental qualifiers”.

However, many soccer enthusiasts in the country are calling for the immediate dismissal of the Flames’ technical team, citing a lack of victories or consistent winning streaks in all competitions.

Zimbabwe emerged champions, defeating Zambia in the final, while Botswana secured third place at Malawi’s expense. For the Flames, the tournament underscored the need for growth and consistency as they set their sights on future qualification campaigns.

The competition, staged from March 28–31, 2026, featured Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
