Mutharika Warns Malawi Risks Becoming Haven for Trafficking and Corruption

~ Malawi Moto Report

Lilongwe, 2nd April 2026: President Peter Arthur Mutharika fears Malawi can be a haven of Human Trafficking, Money Laundering, exploitation of mineral resources and corruption in government ministries and departments if intelligence reports are not accurate and effective.

Speaking Thursday at the State House during the swearing-in of new National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Major General Sayenda, Mutharika said the discovery of precious minerals may attract imposters posing as investors.

“Malawi stands at a crossroads. Without accurate and effective intelligence, our nation risks becoming a haven for human trafficking, money laundering, exploitation of mineral wealth, and corruption within our ministries and departments.

“The discovery of precious minerals will inevitably draw imposters masquerading as investors, intent only on exploiting our resources.

It is therefore your solemn duty, Major General Sayenda, to provide me with clear and reliable information. Only with such intelligence can I make sound decisions that safeguard our people and protect the future of our country.”  said Mutharika.

He urged Major General Sayenda to ensure the provision of accurate intelligence that will enable him to make sound decisions in governing the nation.
